seeing + hearing

seeing and hearing
So let us begin connecting with the visual sense.
If you have noticed, the ears and eyes are on relatively the same level.

There is a center, located within the cranial structure, that blends seeing and hearing in one wonderful space.
Seeing that that is done properly is not accomplished only with the eye.
Hearing, done properly, is not accomplished only with the ear.
If you take an imaginary plumb line and drop it through the top of your head, you will find that center located where the eyes and ears meet.
Seeing is a matter of moving your awareness into your head, feeling for that energy center, and then projecting your vision outward.
I would like us now to practice what we have talked about.
Please take your meditation positions.
Watch your breath for a few moments, until you feel quiet and centered.
Now, with your eyes closed, let your awareness move around in your head until you find a comfortable place where it feels that seeing and hearing meet behind the eyes. Then tilt your head down a bit and look directly at the floor with a soft gaze. When you are gazing softly, your eyes are partly closed and their focus is slightly fuzzy, giving what you are looking at a softness.
To practice seeing, close your eyes and go to that visual center in your head, then open them and gaze softly at the floor
When you find your awareness on the floor rather than in your head, you know you have lost it.
Simply go back to the center within your head, then open your eyes and gaze softly at the floor.
What we are looking for is the sensation of being inside and outside yourself at the same time, joined in a relaxing wholeness. You can do it by staying solidly in your skull, moving your vision out, and joining with and caressing what you are looking at. The "seeing" is still centered in your skull but flows outward from there. You will find that this joining affects the surfaces of the world in a very definite way.
As a result, you and the world begin to feel more and more unified, and you begin to feel less and less separated. When you abandon the center of vision inside your head and wander out through your eyes, it's almost like leaving home in order to see things.
What you are learning now is to stay at home, which means with the physical, and join with what is outside you.
